Kiteboarding Le Morne and Bel Ombre, Mauritius

Mark Twain once said, “God created Mauritius first and then heaven”. This famous quote is well expressed. Mauritius is one of the most beautiful places in the Indian Ocean. It is an island of volcanic origin with sandy beaches and turquoise water found all around its coastline. Mauritius is also an absolute paradise for kitesurfers. Several its sites boasts particularly favorable wind conditions. A large number of the island´s beaches is also perfectly protected from otherwise very high waves. We choose two excellent locations of Mauritius that greatly meet the requirements for all types of wave riders.

The Republic of Mauritius coastline is about 300 km long, completely surrounded by coral reefs and golden beaches. The island attracts a lot of tourism, as any other exotic location, to offer white beaches with fine-grained sand, limpid water, green virgin forests and waterfalls. Mauritius underwater structure creates many places with perfect coastal lagoons. Such a spacious lagoons have flat water as well as waves further out at the reef.  The island is a safe and well approachable place with several flights a week from many of the world’s main cities.

Perfect spots for kitesurfers

Le Morne

Almost every kitesurfer who has been to Mauritius will tell you that the best spot for the sport is at Le Morne. And truly, probably the best kiteboarding area in Mauritius is located here. Le Morne fabulous lagoon is ideally protected by a beautiful reef and is literally created just for kitesurfing. Its vastness ranks it among the most attractive kitesurfing destinations in the world. Its on the north-windward side of the island and thanks to its conditions it is a host of the KSP World Pro Kite Surfing Tour. Some people call this place a „kitesurfing stadium“ created by nature itself. A top spot. Adrex.com cannot disagree, however, if you fancy a more lagoon-style, flat water riding without tourist lying around, there are plenty of spots along the Eastern coast too, offering excellent regular wind conditions, especially in winter months. You can find Le Morne´s lagoon position on the map of Adrex.com Locations...

Bel Ombre

If you decide to go south, the beach of Bel Ombre is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches of Mauritius. And another great insider tip for kite surfers. The lagoon is spacious, the wind cross-onshore and you are one of a few kite-surfers out on the water. You can find a reef with excellent wave riding conditions further out in the water. On top of that this kite spot works with an east wind as well and transforms it into an absolute perfect kite spot. Find also the Bel Ombre coast on the map of Adrex.com Locations...

Weather conditions

As Mauritius is located in the southern hemisphere, the summer and winter months are opposite to seasons in Europe, Asia and N. America. The average day temperature is between 20°C to 26°C. On the coast, the temperatures are higher by about 3 to 5 degrees. The northern and the western parts of the island are usually warmer and dry than the eastern and the southern regions, but windy and humid enough to make the climate not very tropical. The windy season is from May to October and the sea remains relatively warm throughout the year ranging from 26-29° C in summer to 23-25° C in winter.
