The Kimberley Diamond Cup also  features the Rider Cup Team Skateboarding Championships as well as five national championships events for South African skaters, including Women’s Street Championships, Girl’s Street Championships, Vert Championships, Street Championships and the Youth Street Championships.

“We were looking at ways to improve the event and the one thing we felt was missing was a Women’s Street Championship,” said Tim McFerran, CEO of World Skateboarding Grand Prix, the event company that runs the KDC contest. “We felt we couldn’t have a true world championship event without including a women’s contest. It’s going to be an incredible contest and one we feel is especially important in South Africa, where there are so many girls who have taken up skateboarding and who need just as many, if not more, opportunities than boys. For them to see women competing at such a high level, we hope will serve to further encour-age and inspire girls across South Africa and around the world.”

The Official 2014 KDC events are:

  • Men’s Street World Championships  - won in 2013 by Nyjah Huston
  • Men’s Vert World Championships - Andy Macdonald holds the current title
  • Best Trick Contest - 2013 saw 13 year old Jagger Eaton make a huge impression with a 360 flip over the gap

  • Rider Cup Team Skateboarding Championships - the winning US team from the upcoming Rider Cup summer contest in New York’s five boroughs will earn a spot to compete alongside qualifying teams from across South Africa in this unique team-format contest

KDC invited skaters experiencing  the Northern Cape Province’s nearby nature reserves

KDC is also highly supported by Northern Cape government . Five thousand skateboards given away, building five skateparks in the province, all the coaching and competitions where money and skate gear are up for grabs, as well as opportunities in event management, photography, blogging and volunteering changed the lives of many young people in the Northern Cape for the better, not to mention that the city of Kimberley have welcomed thousands of skate tourists. Way to go.
