Ice Diving Greenland – Icebergs and Wrecks of Greenland

Arctic diving is one of Greenland's newer and more unusual activities. North of the Arctic Circle there are several easily accessible shipwrecks, which, apart from their fascinating external details and highly-coloured fauna and flora, are easy to get into and explore. You can be amongst the first in the world to dive the shipwrecks, dive under the icebergs and experience the amazingly lively world under the seas of Greenland.

Diving Borgin Shipwreck

Borgin is the wreck of a wooden schooner which caught fire and went down in 1954. She lies upright at a depth of 25 metres with two of her masts almost reaching the surface. The wreck is well protected from the sometimes very harsh, icey environment. Another opportunity is a Portuguese prison ship, also well-preserved wreck, which lies at a depth of 26 metres. The rig is in good condition and, in particular, two large hatches and the wheelhouse with its wooden helm and steps are well worth a closer look.

Whilst diving you will almost certainly see catfish and lump sucker, forests of sugar tongs with 4-6 meter long leaves and fire-red sea cucumbers. You can collect scallops for supper too. Whilst sailing it is almost impossible not to see whales and seals. If lucky you will be able to come close to humpback whales. This protected species seems completely unfazed by the presence of man. You can hope to be able to swim with these beautiful giants.

You cannot help but be impressed when diving in Greenland. It is a total experience with the sights underwater reinforced by the view from the surface. After diving a shipwreck that very few people have seen, you come up to a landscape of mountains, glaciers or heavyweight icebergs drifting by.

The best time of year is from March until September, with good chances of ice diving in March and April. North of the Arctic Circle there's midnight sun from May through to July. The temperature is always very cold, and not only is a dry suit necessary, but also make sure your regulators and dive computers aren't going to freeze up in the arctic conditions.
