Lake Alta Ice Diving - Scuba Diving New Zealand with Steve Traynor

Lake Alta is a glacial lake in the Remarkables Mountains near Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand. At altitude 1800 m (6000 ft) it freezes over in the winter months and it is used by divers who hold an annual ice dive there. One of the leading organizers of the very traditional event on Lake Alta is Mr. Steve Traynor, New Zealand´s Ice Diving specialist.

Adrex.com introduces an authorised PADI Dive Centre located in the stunning alpine town of Wanaka. Scuba Steve only take small groups, to make sure you get the attention you deserve. They have been teaching divers in the Southern Lakes District for over a decade, so have the experience to ensure your safety and enjoyment. They are the closest PADI Dive Centre to the West Coast, Southern Lakes & Fiordland.

Scuba Steve offers 3 options to Ice Dive Lake Alta :

Option 1: Ice Dive Introduction

This is an introduction to Ice Diving and is the package the Cromwell Underwater Club has been providing for nearly a quarter of a century. Divers are grouped in buddy pairs and need only be Open Water certified. Buddy teams are tethered to the surface and stay close to the exit at all times.

Option 2: Guided Ice Dive

For this option a qualified PADI Instructor and experienced ice diver will dive alongside you and your buddy and guide you on the dive. The guide will carry emergency spare air (pony bottle), lights and lifeline to allow the team to venture further from the exit. Professional photographs of your underwater experience will also be available.

Options 1 & 2 bring your own : Wet / dry suit, mask, gloves, weight belt, fins, plus good boots for standing in the snow and adequate clothes e.g. ski trousers, jackets hats gloves etc.

We will provide you with a BCD, special regulators and tank which are shared amongst divers to reduce the amount we haul up the hill.

Option 3: Overhead Environment/Tec Diver Certified

For the experienced & certified wreck, cave or ice divers we offer the opportunity to conduct the dive within more relaxed supervision using standard technical diving practices. Using equipment for their own private use, teams can reel off from a weighted line secured to the exit/entrance and are able to do much longer bottom times than options 1 and 2. We recommend a single cylinder back gas with a pony or stage set as an independent contingency.

Meeting Place: At the base of the ‘Magic carpet’ lift (learners slope) Remarkables Ski Field.

Dive the two flooded historic bridges in Lake Dunstan, The steel structure of the Cromwell Bridge and the concrete structured Lowburn Bridge with the 1954 Vauxhall car on it.

Lake Hawea

You can also experience Altitude diving at a popular photographic dive site by joining Steve on the Submerged Forest dive at the top end of Lake Hawea. This submerged forest was created by the damming of Lake Hawea. On a calm day it is absolutely stunning and at a depth of only 12m it is a great dive for all levels and ages of diver.
