Wolf Rock: Queensland's Best Dive Spot

Considered to be one of the must do dives when in Australia, Wolf Rock will make you wonder what else is there to see; it is not unusual to see everything from grey nurse sharks, eagle rays, giant Queensland gropers, manta rays, leopard sharks and and bull rays in one dive. Especially the endangered grey nurse shark that is to be found here all year-round is what makes a dive here a highlight; there are tons of them; passing so close, it gives goose bumps.

The congregation of volcanic pinnacles off Double Island Point is regarded as one of Queensland's best dive spots. It is part of the Great Sandy Marine Park and has a 1.5 km protection zone around the formation for the protection of the critically endangered grey nurse sharks. The sharks abundance is easy to explain: it's a site where pregnant females gestate while pregnant. If you are lucky, you might even spot mating sharks during their mating season that is is about to start mid October and continues till end of December.

How close is too close?

Aside from the dozens of grey nurse sharks, Giant Queensland gropers are also regular visitors and manta rays are seen throughout the year particularly in the months of April and May.  Other animals you can expect to dive with are eagle rays, several species of turtles, leopard sharks, bull rays, pelagic species of fish such as giant trevally, kingfish, mackerel and schools of barracuda just to name a few.  Even though Wolf Rock is known to be a “big critter” dive there are still all the other “usual suspects” such as batfish, nudibranchs, anemone fish, octopus, moray eels and much more.

Together with underwater caves that provide shelter not only to the huge giant Queensland gropers, and pinnacle walls that are covered with beautiful soft coral, this place will definitely take your breath away. Hopefully not literally...... In that case though, you might want to look around for a local dive operator. All jokes aside, Wolf Rock is suitable for more experience divers but still, Wolf Rock Dive Centre located in Rainow Beach - a tiny town that is just a stone's throw away from Wolf Rock - might be a good tip; all their dives are guided by experienced dive leaders to show you the best of Wolf Rock.
