Riders on the Storm: Mayan Smith-Gobat and Ines Papert

Two women, a portaledge, 400 kg gear. And five weeks to try to freeclimb a stunning, yet extremely difficult route on the sheer 1300m east face of Torres Central that wasn't previously successfully climbed free though many had tried. On the 6th February Ines Papert and Mayan Smith-Gobat accompanied by photographer Thomas Senf decided to change that. Exactly 25 years after the first ascent of this historic route, their attempt is only the fifth known successful ascent of "Riders on the Storm". Although they didn't succeed entirely, managing to free all but two pitches of the original route, they did find a new 5 pitch variation and climbed the most difficult two of their new variant. Read on to find out whether the girls plan on going back to finish what they have started.

Russians Continue their Ice Climbing Dominance

Russians remained unbeatable in the Speed category of the 2016 UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour final stop that took place in one of Europe’s most beautiful and demanding artificial climbing structures, Rabenstein, Italy before the month of January came to its end. Russian's superpowers were topped with Athletes Maxim Tomilov and Maria Tolokonina who, although didn't finish on the podium that day, both took overall medals in Lead as well as Speed. Other athletes didn't disappointed either and the "Eisturm Rabenstein" saw strong performances especially from Janez Svoljšak of Slovenia and Han Na Rai Song of Korea. More in the article.

Footage of the First Ascent of Mt. Reaper

Hansjörg Auer and Much Mayr, two alpinists from Austria mad the first ascent of a mountain in Alaska that is believed to had been previously unclimbed. They headed to the Neacola Range, a remote location that is known for its hostile weather conditions, rarely there are blue skies. Maybe that's why this location haven't seen more extensive explorations. But that couldn't stop the two Austrian mates giving a try. In May 2015, they packed up and headed north with three different projects in mind. Everything looked good but shortly after they set their camp things took an unanticipated (or anticipated?) turn. A storm was coming up.

Saas Fee Turned into an Atmospheric Amphitheater

During the third round of the penultimate stop of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour, thousands of spectators circled the spiraled car park ramp gaining a privileged view of the world’s best ice climbers. The nature of the arena enables fans to watch the action from several different vantage points, and the vortex effect of the venue generates a lively sound. Over 100 athletes from 17 countries, the actors in this live amphitheater, produced ice climbing of the highest order as round 3 of the season lived up to expectations and proved a key juncture ahead of upcoming weekend’s season finale in Rabenstein, Italy.

Ice Climbing World Cup in a Car Park

This weekend, the multi-floor underground parking “Parkhaus” in Saas-Fee, Switzerland will once again transform into a spectacular ice climbing arena to host the 3rd stage of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup. The 10-storey car park is again the main attraction that together with the ice climbing wall, built in the middle of the circular ramp, will again provide an unusual and amazing stage not only for national and international athletes but also for the viewers to witness lively atmosphere of the ice climbing scene first hand not to mention the legendary ice parties. Simply put, this is an event not to be missed.

First Ascent: Ben Ditto Sends High Times in Tuolumne Meadows

Putting up a new line has always a great feel to it. The feeling of unknown, moments like "commit or bail" are all part of the game. And that's what makes it unique. Known for his serious rock climbing as well as photography skills, Ben Ditto has been long waiting for such "feeling". Although Ben has been a longtime Yosemite local, his recent and also first ascent of a route called High Times (5.13b), a 4th pitch crux of High Times on Drug Dome, Tuolumne Meadows, was his first ever. A steep, northeast-facing line didn't conquer easily as it took Ben ten days to complete but he managed to open it up with style. Check Owen Bissell's edit where Ben takes us through pitch by pitch.
