When you agree to buy a car that they don’t own (the salesman says he knows a dealership that has a 20xx whatever and can get it for you), they will usually ask for a “good faith” deposit sufficient to prove you are serious about buying the car and they will then try to get it for you. You have made an offer to purchase, but have not yet purchased the car because the dealer does not yet own it. Sometimes the car is not available any more for whatever reason.
