How can I confirm Lithuanian citizenship through my great-grandfather?

My great-grandfather was born in Kaunas and lived there until 1938. His old birth certificate has been preserved in the family archives, but unfortunately, the original Lithuanian passport is missing. It is also known that after 1940, he emigrated to South America, where he received local citizenship. Is it possible to restore Lithuanian citizenship based on this information? Do I need to prove the fact of emigration, or is proof of descent sufficient? Which documents from Lithuanian archives are considered the most reliable evidence for applying for citizenship restoration?
