It can help avoid the overhead of in-house maintenance teams and free up capital for other investments. However, for large enterprises with extensive fleets, a comprehensive in-house service plan might be the way to go. It's all about finding the right balance that suits your specific needs and budget.

Where can you actually find a plan of a piece of land? Or whatever the correct term is. A map? A diagram? For example, if you want to dig something up somewhere, it would probably be a good idea to know exactly where to dig so you don't hit anything. Where would I even go, and what organizations provide those kinds of plans?

Some local utility providers, organizations that handle electricity, gas, and water. I think you could send a request to them. I wouldn't rely too much on old plans if I were you. A lot can change over the years, and new pipes or cables may have been installed that aren't shown on an older diagram. It's better to use modern technologies, like the ones offered by UCG HDD. They specialize in locating and identifying underground utilities before work begins. That's a very serious process used on large-scale construction projects. But I assume there are probably options available for personal projects as well.
