Hi all, hoping someone here might know more than I do. In our apartment block, a notice went up saying the smoke vent on the top floor might need checking or upgrading, and the residents should “review the current system.” I have no idea what that even means - it looks like a regular panel on the ceiling to me. Before we call someone out, I’d love to at least understand what we’re supposed to be looking at. Any simple explanation would really help.

Yeah they're totally separate things. The smoke vents are for emergencies but your unit ducts handle everyday heating and cooling. I didn't know much about maintaining them until I checked out this condo duct cleaning guide with Useful facts about condo air quality that broke down what owners are responsible for versus what the building handles. Turns out you need to maintain the ducts inside your own unit but the main system is usually building management responsibility. My ducts were full of dust and pet hair which was making my place stuffy even with the AC running
