Franklin River is one of the rivers in the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. In its flow the river has many rapids from class II to IV and offers a great Kayaking and Rafting opportunity. It is a part of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers, a national park in Tasmania, which is located about 120 km (75 miles) west of the city of Hobart. The park is named after the two main rivers in the area - Franklin River and the Gordon River. Both rivers are only accessible via B61 Gordon River Road finished at lagoons of Gordon Lake.´s map shows the exact location of rivers´ confluence.

The Franklin River lies in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park at the mid northern area of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Its source is situated at the western edge of the Central Highlands and it continues west towards the West Coast of Tasmania.

In the 1980s, the Franklin River become synonymous with Australia's largest conservation battle of the time, the movement to save the Franklin from the Hydro Tasmania proposed hydro-electric power scheme.
