Located in the northernmost of Japan, Hokkaido Powder Guides is owned and operated by Chuck and Toshie Olbery. Together they have been operating the business for 10 years, combining their backgrounds in the travel and ski guiding industries. They and the guiding staff offer backcountry ski guiding and avalanche course instruction on the highest professional level as all of them have enough experience in guiding gained from years working for operations in Japan and abroad.
Whether you seek a pure backcountry action or want to play it safe off the resort piste, you wouldn't probably find better place with the most consistently good snow conditions anywhere in the world - it is simply that good. The snow that falls on Hokkaido's hillsides is light and dry and you typically get 10-15cm of fresh snow fall on 3 or 4 days each week of the season from December to March.
Like many areas of Japan, Hokkaido is seismically active. The center of the island has a number of mountains and volcanic plateaus and a ski trip to Central Hokkaido is an opportunity to ski some of the lightest powder in the world due to the consistent precipitation falls coming from continuous low pressure systems from Siberia.
Hokkaido Powder Trip
Starting in Niseko, you will spend four days skiing Hokkaido’s famous powder on some of the area’s accessible off-piste and side-country terrain. You will then travel to Daisetsuzan National Park and ski on the highest volcano in Hokkaido.
Hokkaido to Hakkoda
If you want to have a traditional Japanese ski experience in two of the foremost powder areas of Japan, this trip is for you. You will spend three days skiing Sapporo surrounding resorts and then travel to the tip of the main island to the mountains of Hakkoda.
Rishiri's Island Volcano
This is a must do for any skier! This true Japanese backcountry ski adventure combines touring from a traditional ryokan accommodation, bathing in hot thermal springs and savoring delicious local seafoood.
