Athens Scuba Park - Underwater Wreckage Playground
From the outside it looks like an ordinary lake until you dive deeper. Beneath the 8 acres surface of the Scuba Lake Athens lies a wreckage playground, perfect for training as well as recreation dives. Once a white clay quarry, since transforming the abandoned property into a dive spot and opening the park in 1987, owner Calvin Wilcher has sank dozens of wrecks there: 3 sail boats 30 feet long, a 75 feet C140 jet, 60 foot aircraft, 16 speed boats, 14 small fishing boats, 9 motorcycles to name a few - there is even a lot more wrecks for people to explore at the bottom of the lake.
"it takes about ten weeks to sink a larger wreck," Calvin Wilcher
The spring-fed, warm water of Athens Scuba Park boasts an average visibility of 35' that can peak at 70'. The lake's depth is from 20 to 35 feet with the park facilities designed for maximum safety and enjoyment for divers. What else to say; where else will you find a 60' Hawker 600 Jet, three 30' sail boats, three cabin cruisers, a Lockheed C-140 Jet Star, Clint Eastwood's film crew's triple deck party barge and a DART bus to explore?
The park's open Wednesday to Sunday and if you have your own scuba license and your own gear the entry fee is 20 bucks, the scuba park also offers night diving, lessons and an equipment rentals. For non-divers, the park offers camping, RV Sites with Electricity, volleyball, snorkeling and even live music on select weekends.
