Cabo Pulmo - Unparalleled Sea Garden

Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park features one of the world’s healthiest coral reefs, and dive sites mere yards from shore. Located on the east coast of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, the reef has the widest coralline cover in the Gulf of California, providing a safe haven for many of the 800 species of marine animals. Although the reserve is no more than 5 kilometers (3 miles) wide and measures 14 kilometers (almost 9 miles), the marine life within the reef has been doing good for years, so good in fact, that researchers have dubbed it “the most successful marine reserve in the world.”

Dick Barrymore, best known as the pioneer in hotdog ski film making,  spent over 30 years shooting ski films around the world.  In 1970, he and his wife Betsy and his 2 sons, Blake and Cole, landed in Cabo Pulmo in a Cessna 182 after seeing the reef and were amazed at all the sea life and size of the fish.  From that moment on, Cabo Pulmo become the love of Dick’s life.

As an avid spear fisherman, the Barrymore’s had to give it all up in 1995 when the National Marine Park was established to help protect the diving and snorkeling and accommodate the National Park rules. It was obvious step to actively pursue expanding the small dive and snorkel operation. More than 20 years later, Cabo Pulmo Dive Center located inside Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort  is one of the best PADI dive operations in all Baja.

"The coral reef is approximately 20,000 years old. When reaserchers compared  its age to that of other coral reefs in the Americas, they found that it is among the oldest in the American Pacific"

Due to the Park's conservation programs, the underwater sea world on the East Cape of Baja is teaming with much bigger fish than before.  From Loreto to La Paz and on to San Jose and then to Cabo San Lucas you will not find anything like Cabo Pulmo.  On the outer reef in only 60 feet of water, there are several huge Black Sea Bass the size of refrigerators!   The shear numbers of fishes in the marine park are astronomical.  Scuba Divers now get to experience this special little Mexican village where there are no time-share salesmen or panhandlers to sell you anything. You can walk for miles on the beach and not see anyone at times!

"Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort feels like 'Old Mexico' the way it was back in the 70’s"

Since the beginning of Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort, the Barrymore’s have all played a part in developing a very unique and different Eco-Resort for over the last 25 years. They run daily dives into the reef with small groups of a max of 6 divers per instructor on full-equipped Panga Boats with O2 on board and provide gear rentals. The Center also offers various PADI courses, snorkeling tours and bungalows lodging.
