Diving Lanzarote - Underwater Canary Islands

Lanzarote is the easternmost island of the autonomous Canary Islands. In 1993, the whole island, including local inhabitants and their homes, was proclaimed an UNESCO biosphere reserve. Quite unusual for the given year, one might think, but the coexistence between man and nature is very noticeable here. First of all, you won't find any large hotels here as you might have thought. With the government help, the buildings are rather small and villages harmonized. Even a newly arising restaurants or vantage points are of subtly settings. In other words, Lanzarote inhabitants know well, that their unique nature and culture are major tourist attractions that lead to a profit. Anyway, the place is rather peaceful and with a great diving spots we'll take you through, now.

Lanzarote underwater world bears the marks of volcanic origin. If you go under the surface you will find variedness at every corner so unique even for the Canary Islands. Steep walls 200 meters deep, tunnels, huge overhangs, rivers of lava, caves, shipwrecks or vast fields between Lanzarote and La Graciosa island, all in one place. Also the fact that the deepness level between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura islands isn't even 40 meters, although the ocean level between the rests of islands is approximately 3000 – 4000 meters, makes this place even more attractive! The overall lenght of the whole island is 213 km, water temperature is between 18 – 24°C and visibility 20 – 40 meters according to the time of the year. Today, we'll have a closer look at few areas from the north and the north-east. In our next article we'll explore the rest.

VERIL DE LAS LANGOSTAS

In the area El Veril de las Agujas there are several interesting and charming places to dive. In its southern part is the Veril de las Langostas, which is particularly interesting for a variety of fish and special rock formations. Sharp rocks form a backdrop for completely different from the rest of the island. In caves and crannies of these rocks we find crawfish that gave this place its name. Local greenish barracuda again surprised by its size, we run into the school of sweetlips and leporina. During the dive we pass through the labyrinth of rocks. Beware of strong currents! We are located in the strait between the two islands (Lanzarote and Graciosa) and therefore the currents are quite strong. Draught is easy and the depth is about 14-20 m.

MONTAÑA AMARILLA

Montaña Amarilla is one of the most beautiful dives on the Isle of y on the whole Canary Islands. The rocks are strikingly yellow color - hence the name Yellow Mountain. It is a sample instead of as volcanic magma in the distant past clashed with the cold ocean water. Fire and water ... The location is also perfect for snorkeling. The immersion depth is 0-20 meters.

CHARCO DEL PALO

Charco del Palo is a place where contrasts rugged volcanic landscape with sand. Draught is a good option if on the northwest of the island are poor conditions. Volcanic rocky landscape here goes sharply in the sandy bottom. In the restricted site you will find many marine species of Canary islands. Shallow rocky parts are covered with algae, in 10 meters we come across a number of sea urchins at a depth of 40-50 meters we find the black coral. The area is quite extensive, recommended two dives. It is also good for snorkeling.

ARRECIFE – TELAMON SHIPWRECK

The shipwreck originally called Temple Hall (she was later renamed the Telamon, owned by Greek company Telamon Maritime) on the Arrecife shore was on the route from Ivory Coast with a cargo of logs when she sprung a leak and was forced to run aground in Arrecife in 1981. Now, two ways apart, sung astern catches a lot of visitors by surprise when passing along the old coastal road. The dive is suitable for beginners and what is more, you can explore the shipwreck just by snorkeling. We recommend diving in at dusk and savor every moment of it.
