Diving SS Stavronikita Wreck in Barbados

Barbados has long been known for it's white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters, friendly smiles and, of course, rum! One of it's lesser known but by no means lesser quality attractions is it's beauty beneath the seas. Barbados abundant underwater life does not consists only of the works of mother nature, but is enriched also by several human creations in the form of shipwrecks surrounding the island. The well-known wreck sites are found in Carlisle Bay and the western coast with the names like Pamir, Friars, Berwyn, Fox and Stavronikita e.g. - which we decided to describe here.

Barbados is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, almost 100 miles east of the Windward Islands. Unlike it's neighboring islands, which are mostly volcanic, Barbados was built entirely out of coral. Year after year, decade after decade and century after century, coral life and death built Barbados up from the ocean depths. This building process is still continuing and can be witnessed in huge 6 ft barrel sponges, gigantic sea fans, black corals  and hundreds of tropical fish that adorn every crack and crevice on it's fringing and barrier reefs which circle the island.

S.S. Stavronikita

One of the premier wrecks of the Caribbean is the S.S. Stavronikita. S.S. Stavronikita is a Greek freighter that was deliberately sunk in 1978 to form an artificial reef. She is 112 meters (365ft) long and sits bolt upright in 40 meters (130ft) of water off the west coast. The dive can go from 25 to 43 meters with rather good visibility of 10-20 meters. Her propeller is very popular for taking photos among divers. Cabin, alleyways and the cargo holds beckon you to peek. The enormous masts which come to within 6 m of the surface are coated with sponges, corals and hundreds of fish. This is really one of the best  Barbados dives you cannot miss. It is located only about 70 meters from the shore, just close to Coral Reef Club on the western coast.
