Mary's Place - One of the Best Dives in the Caribbean

Created by prehistoric volcanic activity, a huge fissure was created in the reef, allowing the steep walls to make a coral and sponge-filled labyrinth at 70 feet deep. That's how you could briefly describe Mary's Place, one of Roatan’s most spectacular dive sites. Famous for its deep, sheer-walled crevasse, lined with beautiful corals in all colors, decorated with rope, tube sponges and seafans, the fissure can be illuminated by streaming sunlight or be mysteriously dark — no wonder Mary's Place is ranked high on any serious underwater photographer's list.

Diving and the treasures to be found below the surface of the clear blue Caribbean Sea have been Roatan’s main attraction for a long time. Home of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world, Roatan is a place not to be missed. Caves and crevices, thousand-foot walls, wrecks, an airplane, abundant sea life, turtles, sharks, rays and the largest number of sponges in the Caribbean all make Roatan and the Bay Islands one of the most desirable diving destinations in the world.

There are many amazing dive sites to explore on Roatan such us Mr. Bud Wreck, a cargo ship sunk intentionally in 1995 or Insidious Reef, a relatively undiscovered site off the south shore that is out of range of most dive operators, but Mary's Place top them all. Located on the south side of the island near a small, boutique resort Barefoot Cay, a home of Barefoot Divers, a PADI 5 Star IDC Center, this underwater paradise is just few minutes away by boat from there.

Barefoot Divers offer a full range of PADI instruction, from Discover Scuba through to Instructor courses, and also offer fun dives with their valet diving service - as they put it, "we do the work, you have the fun". Their staff sets up your gear, greets you after your dive with towels, fresh fruit and water, breaks down your gear, rinses it and puts it away for you, so you have more time to enjoy your vacation. The dive services are available to resort guests as well as non-resort guests, including cruise ship visitors who are on Roatan for a day - they're just a few minutes away from the Mahogany Bay cruise ship terminal.

Barefoot Divers from the water

Whether you want to dive Mary's Place or dive slightly out of the way from most dive operations, Roatan is a place to check. Barefoot Divers keep the groups small, and boats depart three times daily. The dive center is open all year round and if you are certified diver one dive ranges between 30-40 bucks, the center also offers snorkel trips, night diving, equipment as well as dive computer rentals  or lodging at the resort.

Barefoot Divers' friendly staff is awaiting you!
