The Search Continues: Diving on the SS Yongala wreck with Yongala Dive

There are thousands of sunken wrecks all across the world that have become popular diving sites attracting divers from different corners of our planet. Although there are many wrecks to dive on along the Australian coastline, one of the most outstanding wreck dives remains that of the S.S. Yongala, a luxury passenger and freight ship that sank in a cyclone near the coast of Queensland over 100 years ago. Discovered 50+ years later, lying in 15 to 28 meters of water on its starboard side, she's been recognized as one of the largest, most intact historic shipwrecks in Australian waters.

No one will probably ever find out what preceded her tragedy but one thing is certain, the dive is one of the world’s best. Due to the prolific variety and size of marine life…..everything is BIG.  Giant gropers, giant marble rays and giant trevally as big as people alone would be amazing but swimming amongst schools of barracuda, eagle rays, turtles, sea snakes, bull sharks etc. on a coral encrusted wreck combine to make this a ‘bucket list’ dive that can't be missed by any serious divers.

One of the dive centres that regularly dive the S.S. Yongala is ‘Yongala Dive’, a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort located in Alva Beach near Ayr, a sunny and sandy beach extending northward to Cape Bowling Green, the location of the world-famous wreck dive spot.

Yongala Dive has been taking divers to the wreck for the past 10 years and has gained an international  reputation for providing a quality experience, professional service, safety and value while still offering passengers the North Queensland ‘laid back’ day.   The ‘Yongala Dive experience’ aims to provide certified divers with a unique adventure trip to the historicS.S.Yongala wreck including premier diving with small groups, experienced dive staff, a 4WD beach transfer and even a beach launch.

So bring your sense of adventure, passion to explore and eagerness to learn about the tragic history while you witness marine life matched by few other places on the face of this planet……

Yongala Dive is also an Advanced Eco Tourism accredited operator meeting the needs and desires of the eco-conscious traveller and committed to offering an experience which is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.

4WD to the beach is part of the SS Yongola adventure

The dive centre is open Monday to Sunday from 8am - 5pm, offer lodgings at the beach, providing a range of PADI courses from which the majority are run at the wreck site for even greater experience and you can even become a dive professional the ‘Yongala Dive’ way by taking a Dive Master internship and get to dive over 50 dives on the wreck.
