Under the Pole - Underwater Polar Exploration

Did you know that Rolex, world-famous luxury watches maker has been supporting extreme explorations since the 1930s? We had not idea. Once again, they put together a team of divers joined by scientists to explore what is beneath the Pole. The expedition that combines ski trekking and scuba diving in one of the toughest climates on the planet, the North Pole, gone underway in January 2014 and was planned to explore the coastal ice sheet, open sea ice sheet, glacier fronts, icy fjords and the continental shelf during the next 22 months. All this between the polar circle and north of Greenland.

This new expedition is in the lineage of the first expedition “Deepsea Under The Pole” that took place in spring 2010. Whereas the first expedition has focused on the sea ice in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, the second one named UTP II - Discovery Greenland will study the last lands of the planet over almost two seasonal cycles.

Under The Pole is a series of submarine polar expeditions aiming at exploring the hidden face of Arctic and Antarctic polar regions in their diversities. A new submarine approach providing world unique images and a better scientific knowledge of the environment. Despite the early termination of the first expedition in 2010, it was a huge success, completing 51 dives and shooting nearly 40 hours of video and more than 10,000 images that was to create a book and 90-minute documentary film "We Walked under the Pole".
