All Three Tre Cime di Lavaredo Peaks Climbed in 16 Hours

Swiss Ueli Steck and German Michi Wohlleben have created almost an unbelievable speed climbing record. Together they climbed all three peaks of the well-known group of mountains, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, in just one day. The so called „Three Peaks“ rank among the most interesting rock formations and climbing areas worldwide. Three huge and picturesque limestone towers are located in the Dolomites, northeastern Italy.

On March 17 the Swiss climbing „speed machine“ Ueli Steck and the young German guide Michi Wohlleben managed to climb all the three north faces of the Tre Cime tops in just15 hours and 42 minutes! The Cima Grande is the highest of the trio with 2,999 metres (9,839 ft) followed by the Cima Ovest with 2,973 metres (9,754 ft) and the Cima Piccola, which height is at 2,857 metres (9,373 ft).

This is the first ever winter ascent of the three northern walls in just one day. Their routes were Cassin (Cima Ovest), Comici (Cima Grande) and Innerkofler (Cima Piccola), all climbed nonstop up to the top and down the normal way on the opposite side. Michi Wohlleben describes this winter „Tre Cime“ northern walls trilogy on Ueli Steck´s website.

The spot is best accessible from Cortina d'Ampezzo or the city of Auronzo di Cadore. It can be reached from the west via SS51 road and from the east (Auronzo di Cadore) via SS52 road, both continuing by SS48 until Grand Hotel Misurina crossroads, the point from which you can get (via toll road) almost to the Tre Cime north face base (Rifugio Auronzo).
