Dani Arnold smashes Ueli Steck’s Speed Record up Matterhorn

Swiss alpinist and mountain guide Dani Arnold broke the speed-climbing record on Matterhorn, as he completed the classic route on the North Face in 1 hour and 46 minutes. He was fast enough to beat the existing record which was set in 2009 by the “Swiss Machine” Ueli Steck, who climbed the route just 10 minutes slower than Arnold. Arnold claims that it would be possible to scale the North Face of Matterhorn even faster than his current record.

It might seem somewhat insignificant to focus on minutes when it comes to accomplishments of this magnitude, but speed climbers keep pushing the limits of what was thought humanly possible. The North Face was first scaled on July 31st and August 1st, 1931 by the Schmid brothers, who received Olympic gold for their amazing feat in 1932.

Dani Arnold is one of the world’s best speed alpinists. Despite that, he was fairly unknown in the climbing circles until his record-breaking ascent of Eiger’s North Face in 2011.
