David Lama’s First Free Ascent of Patagonia’s Cerro Torre

David Lama, nick named "Fuzzy", was born in 1990 to his Nepalese father and Austrian mother. Himalaya veteran Peter Habeler noticed his talent when he saw him climbing at the age of five. When David was 12, he ascended 8b+ route and became historically the youngest climber to achieve this. At the age of 15 he became junior world champion and he managed to win European Youth Cup. In 2012 David travelled to Patagonia and together with Peter Ortner accomplished first free ascent of the south east ridge of the famous Cerro Torre. Video about this enterprise is below.

Cerro Torre is located in Southern Patagonian Ice Field, Argentina, South America. Altitude of the mountain is 3,128 m. It is a peak of ever changing moods predicated by swirling storm clouds or an intense orange alpine glow on the rare clear days. It is the highest of four mountain chain peaks: Torre Egger, Punta Herron, and Cerro Standhardt. The peak is often covered with ice, formed by strong winds which makes it more difficult to reach the summit. David estimated the difficulties of his free ascent as grade X- (hard 8a but mentally highly demanding)
