Elbrus Mountain Vertical Kilometer - Final Results

Vitaliy Chernov and Elena Kravchenko (both from Irkutsk, Russia, Red Fox Team) win the Vertical Kilometer race on Elbrus Mountain (Russia, Red Fox Elbrus Race Festival), 7 May, 2014. During the race the winner run on the third position after Vitaliy Shkel and Marko de Gasperi (Italy). He outrunned them just in seconds right before the finish line.

Very close to each other are results in women category. But it is worth to note well-known young ski-mountaineer Ekaterina Osichkina. She was not included in the main results list because of the young age, but shows the best time and came to the finish line first. Her timing is 54 minutes and 3 seconds.

All the athletes of Vertical Kilometer race noted, that this year the given distance was much more difficult than previous years.

"The track was much more complex, than two years ago," said Marko de Gasperi. "A lot of snow, and perhaps I have not such a good acclimatization like the time. It was near impossible to run. Hard to breathe, of course. And I realized that my rivals are very strong". Famous athlete could not hide a smile, knowing, that his two years ago record time is not beaten by Vitaly Chernov.

"I lay out completely and very tired. But happy!" said Vitaliy. "I was tuned to the victory. I knew that the first place will be played between the three leaders. Everyone stood by strength, and all the way I followed Vitaliy Shkel. And the result is certainly depended by the finishing qualities!"

And Elena Kravchenko did not expect to win. "I decide that I should run the distance by my strength, evenly. During training runs I expected on the very time, and during running just did not know, where my competitors was. The snow was very disturbing; in some places we find the real snow piles".

Joanna Vokueva (Salomon International Team), only yesterday arrived to Elbrus, and today showed excellent results, finishing in the 2nd place. "I just want to understand – can I run, or not," said Joanna. "During the distance listen to myself. And very satisfied with the result! The difference from last year race - only 6 seconds".

And, of course, all closely followed Vitaliy Shkel run – he is the one of the main contenders to the great start, speed run to the Elbrus Mountain (9 May, 5642 m). "It was no run," said Shkel. "Hope for a good time not accounted. The track was not on the limit, I have some strength storage. But Vitaly Chernov's finish really surprised me! He is cool!"

The total numbers of Vertical Kilometer participants are 205 men and 50 women – a record number of athletes. They have experienced the new system of electronic monitoring results. Each participant was given a chip and at the finish the result was known immediately, after electronic sensors passage.
