The 2014 IFSC World Cup season got back into gear after the Gijón World Championships in September with three competitions in October, unofficially called Asian tour. This past weekend, Mokpo, coastal city located on the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula at the foot of Yudal Mountain, hosted the world’s best Lead and Speed climbers in their return to competition after one month of rest and training since the World Championships in Gijón.
The surprises in Mokpo began even before the finals, with the recently crowned 2014 Lead World Champion Adam Ondra placing 9th in the semi-finals and thus missing the finals by just one place and one move. In the men’s finals, Jakob Schubert (AUT) started things off early with a top on the endurance-based final route and was able to fend off his competitors, remaining the only man to top the finals route and taking the gold medal. Slovenia’s Domen Skofic took silver with a score of 49, followed by Romain Desgranges of France in third place with 44+. The women’s field was shocked by 2014 World Champion Jain Kim’s fall early in the final route, which put her in 6th place on her home turf in Korea. Seasoned veteran Mina Markovic of Slovenia won her 15th World Cup gold medal with confidence with a score of 45+, followed by Belgium’s Anak Verhoeven in second with 43+, and France’s Hélène Janicot in third with a score of 38+

In Speed, familiar faces occupied the podiums, but their order was rather mixed up. After placing 8th in the Gijón World Championships, Russia’s Iuliia Kaplina made a great comeback and took gold in Mokpo with a time of 7.88 seconds, followed by Anouck Jaubert of France, also making her way back from a fall in Gijón that put her in 15th place, then Patrycja Chudziak of Poland in third. In the men’s field, Poland’s Marcin Dzienski won his first World Cup gold medal with a time of 6.23, followed by Libor Hroza (CZE) in second and Danyl Boldyrev (UKR) in third.
Next stop: Wujiang, China
The IFSC World Cup Asian tour will be stopping in Wujiang, China, for another dual Speed and Lead competition.
