Montana Alpine Guides - Your Choice in the Rockies

While some people might think that the highest peak in Wyoming is Grand Teton, 70 miles southeast of Grand Teton lies one that is higher - Gannett Peak. At 13,809'/4,209m, this beauty is a massive and remote summit located in the Central Rockies; the largely continuous group of the chain occupying the states of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Considered by many to be the most difficult state high point except for Mt. McKinley in Alaska, any summit attempt of Gannett Peak requires a wide variety of mountaineering skills. And that's when a local climbing experts can come in handy.

To make your decision easier, we asked Sam Magro, the owner & chief guide of Montana Alpine Guides (MAG ) what's on offer. If you don't know Sam, he's guided professionally since 2004 in many places, from the AK Range to Himalayas or Patagonia to name a few. However, he still considers his backyard (Yellowstone ) his favorite place to climb. No wonder, the Yellowstone Ecosystem is a true, pure wilderness with endless climbing opportunities.

"We offers technical rock climbing, ice climbing, mountain climbs, and backcountry skiing in and around Yellowstone National Park for beginners to experts.  Climbing with MAG was voted by National Geographic as one of 5 best things to do when visiting Montana.  Our trips range from ½ day to multi-day outings.  We have been guiding under our permit since 1985 (30 years) specializing in technical climbing and backcountry skiing in some of the more beautiful areas in and around Yellowstone National Park", says Sam.

Gannett Peak - The Highest Mountain Peak in Wyoming

The fifth-highest state highpoint is not like picking daisies out there, it's a serious backcountry with technical climbing, poor weather, and route finding. Although a few climbers have been able to summit the peak within 24 hours, the peak is commonly climbed on a four- to six-day round-trip.  There are two standard approaches for the peak, each with its advantages and disadvantages.

When it comes to difficulty, Gannett Peak has only few rivals - Denali (Alaska), Mount Rainier (Washington), and Granite Peak (Montana).

"We offer guided climbing trips on Gannett Peak from the Cold Springs trailhead by way of the Wind River Reservation. We choose this route because it is the most effortless and arguably the most beautiful approach to climb Gannett Peak", continues Sam.

The North entrance at Gardiner Montana is the only entrance which remains open during the winter.

The MAG ice guides are composed of some of the most experienced climbing guides in The Rockies with years of teaching and guiding in Hyalite Canyon and elsewhere.

If you want to check MAG out, they are located in Bozeman, Montana, the international gateway to Yellowstone National Park and Big Sky mountain resort from where  the north and the west entrances to the Yellowstone are just over an hours drive.  If you wish to have a climbing or skiing adventure while visiting Yellowstone MAG are your local experts for anything from beginner to extreme. And just to let you know, MAG's Gannett Peak guiding starts summer of 2015! Check it out.
