Mt.Washington - Home of the World's Worst Weather

Brett and Corey Fitzgerald opened Northeast Mountaineering in 2011, originally offering exclusively Winter Mt. Washington Ascents. After a busy first season, they began expanding their programs and soon launched their Intro to Rock Climbing program in the Spring of 2012. As the word spread, the Northeast Mountaineering guide staff began expanding and a permanent home for the company was solidified in Bartlett, NH.

Mount Washington is the highest mountain in the Northeastern United States, towering over its neighbors at 6,288 ft (1,917 m), and is the most prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River. The mountain is well known among climbers for its dangerously erratic weather, especially strong winds. So strong that for 76 years, until 2010, Mount Washington's peak, held the world record for the fastest wind gust (231 mph - 372 km/h) ever recorded on the surface of the Earth!

There are many differences between climbing Mount Washington in summer and climbing it in winter. A climb of Mt. Washington in the winter is a serious undertaking and will incorporate all of your mountaineering knowledge. Guides from Northeast Mountaineering (NEM) ascend one of a few routes to the summit depending on route and snow conditions. The most popular hiking trail approach to the summit used by NME is via the 4.1-mile (6.6 km) Tuckerman Ravine Trail. In the winter they use the Lion’s Head winter route to avoid avalanche hazard and descend the same route as the ascent. So if you want to relish in the glory of standing on top of Mt. Washington, at the highest point in the Northeast USA, NME are the guys to check.

In 2012 NEM opened the Bunkhouse at Northeast Mountaineering which offers affordable hostel style lodging as well as serves as the home base for NEM. Now heading into their 4th Winter, NEM employees 10 guides and offers Mt. Washington Ascents in all seasons as well as various ice climbing, rock climbing, and mountaineering programs. To round out their menu they also guide backcountry skiing, wilderness navigation, and waterfall rappelling. Northeast Mountaineering runs programs in various areas of the United States and have recently begun guiding treks and climbs in Nepal.
