The 2015 IFSC World Cup: Rising Stars Took Haiyang by a Storm

The second Asian stop of the 2015 IFSC World Cup that took place in Haiyang is a wrap. The municipality of Haiyang was once again in the spotlight this past weekend, and the heat didn’t prevent the world’s best boulderers and speed climbers from putting on an impressive show. In Bouldering, rising stars took gold for the first time, while the all-time favorites confirmed their supremacy in the Speed competition.

Boulderer Petra Klingler took gold for the first time in an IFSC World Cup, beating Akiyo Noguchi of Japan by only one attempt. It has been a long time coming for the Swiss climber, who started competing in the World Cups’ senior category in 2011 and who has rarely made it to the finals since then, let alone on the podium. She proved today that she can beat the very best. More familiar faces complete the podium, with Akiyo Noguchi in second and, just like in Chongqing  and Vail (USA), British climber Shauna Coxsey in third. Akiyo Noguchi still leads the overall rankings, but the pressure is on.

On the men’s side, rising star Jongwon Chon of Korea also took gold for the first time in an IFSC World Cup, topping out two problems in three attempts and securing two bonuses in two attempts. This is a coronation for the Korean, who now leads the overall rankings. Aged only 19, he is a star on the rise, and it is safe to assume that we will see many more good results from him in the future. Again, more familiar faces complete the podium, with Russia’s Rustam Gelmanov in second place and Toronto winner Alban Levier of France in third. All-time favorites' Jan Hojer and Adam Ondra came fourth and fifth respectively. They stand only a few points behind Jongwon Chon in the overall rankings, and they won’t let him win that easily.

In Speed, local hero Qixin Zhong continued his perfect run of gold medals by posting yet another flawless performance in Haiyang. During finals, he dominated Ukrainian strongman Danyil Boldyrev by as much as one second, thus establishing himself as the clear leader in the overall rankings. Reza Alipourshena of Iran took third for his first podium spot of the season.

In the women’s field, Anouck Jaubert of France is back on top of the podium after a fiercely fought grand finale against Anna Tsyganova of Russia. World Record owner Iuliia Kaplina came third after a much-disputed small final against her teammate Mariia Krasavina, who now leads the overall rankings.

Next stop is France and Chamonix will host the first stop of the 2015 IFSC Lead World Cup series, with a dual Lead and Speed competition. At the foot of the Mont-Blanc, the alpine sports capital of the Alps will provide a dramatic setting to a display of world-class climbing! Stay tuned.
