The First Ever Bouldering Youth and Junior World Championships Show Promise

There was a lot of anticipation surrounding this first ever Bouldering Youth and Junior World Championships that was held this past weekend in Arco, Italy, and the event certainly did not disappoint as the up-and-coming talents in Bouldering battled for the World title! Despite the competitors’ very young age, the event truly saw a display of world-class climbing. Notably, Japan brought home one gold and three silver medals in Bouldering. The women’s event shed light on the exciting future of female Bouldering, with rising stars Janja Garnbret of Slovenia and Ashima Shiraishi of USA dominating the Female Youth A and Female Youth B categories respectively. The two are well known for their incredible performances on rock and in competitions, where they have won medals in youth and senior events alike.

In the Female Junior category, there was a fierce battle between Serbian Stasa Gejo, who took gold with two tops in three attemps, and Japanese Miho Nonaka, who scored two tops in nine attemps and secured silver. Austrian white hope Jessica Pilz placed third, continuing her astonishing series of good results this season.

In the Male Junior’s event, all eyes were on Jongwon Chon of Korea, who won the Bouldering World Cup overall ranking 2015 in the senior category. He secured gold with a narrow margin, ahead of frenchman Nicolas Pelorson, who was only one bonus attempt behind, and Anze Peharc from Slovenia, who took bronze.

The Male Youth A competition was dominated by the Japanese athletes, with Yoshiyuki Ogata taking gold and Kai Harada securing silver. Buoyed by the intense cheers of his home crowd, Filip Schenk won the Male Youth B competition with 3 tops, far ahead of the rest of the field in what proved to be a particularly tough Final round. All in all, new climbers showed a lot of promise and we can only look forward to see more action from those climbing stars on the rise.
