The Lakeland Climbing Centre: Britain's Major Climbing Indoor Facility

Relatively small in population, the town of Kendal has been firmly placed on the map due to The Lakeland Climbing Centre (also known as the Kendal Wall), the largest Climbing Centre in the North of England. The building was originally used for drying milk and when the plant was no longer in use, it gave rise to the creation of a climbing Centre and soon gained recognition for its quality of climbing and over the years has become a world-class facility. The award winning premier Climbing Centre boasts the tallest indoor climbing wall in the country and incorporates Kendal CrazyClimb and Skyline Indoor Aerial Adventure, Europe’s first indoor Via Ferrata.

The story starts in 1993 when three climbers met and hatched a plan to build a climbing wall. One climber had the capital, one climber had the skills to build the wall and the other had found the perfect building for the Kendal Wall, the old Milk Drying Plant in Kendal. Throughout the years the facility grew steadily, adding new features, developing a great relationship with a supportive customer base of climbers who actually appreciated having a major indoor climbing wall in their area.

The main boulder area

10 circuits graded Vb-V10, steep walls, intricate slabs and technical problems is just a fraction of what one finds inside. The focal point of the indoor climbing area is the Main Hall with its 25 meter high leading wall, the highest in the country.  50 leading lines ranging from slabs to roofs, from 7m to a staggering 25m high and with route grades from 3 to 8b together with unique features such as the stalactite and two auto belays, you will never get bored here.

For those new to the game, the Centre offers a more modest range of walls and route grades, providing excellent climbing for children. Other facilities include a variety of superb bouldering areas to suit beginners through to experts, a comprehensive training facility, brand new Kendal CrazyClimb, Dry Tooling and Aid Climbing facility known as the The Toolbox, Skyline Indoor Aerial Adventure, Creamery Café and Kendal Wall Shop.

New routes are set every week to make it as varied and challenging as possible and the routes are made harder in the winter to meet the needs of those interested in serious training.
