Monterreal Longboard Fest 2014 - Mexico

IDF (International Downhill Federation), the host of World Qualifing Series gets ready for the Monterreal Longboard Fest 2014 (MLF), not only a skateboard downhill race taking place in Mexico at the end of this month. Set in a spectacular and unique apple-farming landscape, the 2.3 miles long track with high-speed stretches and shrap, technical corners is a real challenge. Coahuila de Zaragoza has one of the best hills in the world making the MLF truly the best downhill race out there. It was Trevor Baird who won the MLF Open Downhill in 2013 from fellow American Dustin Hampton, with Brian Sandoval from Costa Rica taking third. Will the local favorite Gerardo Moreno, who crashed in the final last year, attack the first notch again?

From 28-31 May, the famous international event takes place once again in a small town Mesa de las Tablas in Coahuila, right in the highlands of Arteaga, situated northeast of Mexico. The area is recognized as one of the most famous and challenging sites for gravity sports in Mexico. But the MLF is not just about racing, it is a three day international festival that comprises of a downhill skateboarding race, skateboard bowl jam, mountain bike downhill race, slacklining and live music, performed by amazing bands and DJ's. No need to mention the traditional “chiquichores” contest inseparably linked to the event.

The 2.3 miles (3.7 kilometres) long track, with quick straights and technical turns finishes at the village entrance - as riders slow to a stop they find themselves in the main street among open air food stalls set up by the local villagers (about only 300 people live there).

“chiquichores”contest - a little hint: it is about chicks:)

The best thing of all is that the local kids have started skateboarding in the wake of the out-of-town longboarders who skate their hill, and six of them entered the race in 2013 having been donated the necessary safety equipment. These kids have one of the best hills in the world literally in their backyard, and they skate every day!

Three days to celebrate away from the constant barrage of emails, pollution and city stress, that's what the MLF is all about - beautiful landscapes, adrenaline overdoes, rad parties, and yummy regional cuisine. There are many places to stay at around Mesa de las Tablas including campsites or cottages depending on your needs and budget. The brave ones can sleep anywhere they please. No need to say that no fire or throwing garbage is allowed. There are few tips you might want to check before heading to Mexico, for more on that go to the event's website.

Isn't it great?

For those who would like to come to the event, participate or just visit the Mesa de las Tablas on their own, here are coordinates: 25º 13′ 16.4922″ - 100º 23′ 30.4038″
