Biking in the Upper Mustang Valley, Nepal

Mountain biking trip to the Upper Mustang Valley in Nepal is truly one of the most awe-inspiring adventures and a phenomenal biking experiences that you’ll never forget. The trails lead you into a remote and until recently forbidden area, restricted to foreigners until 1992. A unique place of ancient Buddhist and Tibetan culture offers an unmatched environment of eight-thousand meter mountains and hundreds of tracks between them.

After you take some time to relax and soak in one of Nepal’s ancient cities you arrive in (Kathmandu, Pokhara), you have to take a short flight to Jomsom. Not in vain its name rather evokes something strange from the Star Wars series. Already upon landing at the Jomsom airport you discover why. Almost without green, located at an altitude of 2800 meters, the city will welcome you to an astonishing moonscape of Mustang District. In Jomsom, it is a time to assemble your bike, and after having breakfast, embark on a journey through the valley between Mount Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri and dozens of other peaks.

Adrex.com recommends services of Pokhara Mountain Bike Center, probably the best guide to most of Upper Mustang trails including: Kagbeni (2800m) to Muktinath (3800m), Distance: 20 Km, 100% rideable (altitude gained: +1000m), Muktinath (3800m) to Chaile (3050m) down for about 750 m, Chaile (3050 meters) to Syangboche (3800 m), 22 km from Syangboche (3800 m) to Charang (3560m) through the highest pass of 4000 m and final graduation from Charang (3560m) to Lo-Manthang (3800m).

Lo-Manthang

Words can’t really describe this amazing Upper Mustang landscape, where the main destination point „Lo-Manthang“ is located. Lo-Manthang, the ultimate destination of the route, is an area where only handful of foreigners have ever paid visit and only possible with a special permit. The town was constructed in the 15th century on a plateau 3800 meters above sea level. The journey to reach it goes high onto the Tibetan Plateau at a maximum altitude of 4300 meters. As you leave Lower Mustang and venture deeper in to the Kaligandaki gorge you’ll leave behind the familiar Nepali greeting of “Namaste”, now replaced by “Tashi Delek” in the local reigional dialect. This area is the home of an ancient Tibetan Kingdom with a recorded history dating back 700 years.

The culture of Mustang is distinctly Tibetan and Lo-Manthang is one of the last places where you can see this ancient culture, relatively untouched by modern influences, located in a province whose name translates as ‘Across the Himalayas’. If you can visit in early May, the trip coincides with the spring Tiji festival where you’ll experience rich traditional displays of music, dance and costume to celebrate the arrival of spring after the harsh winter.
