The Return of the Moab Mountain Unicycling Festival

I have came across a unicycle long time ago. Some guy trying to jump on a grind box at a skatepark. Weird I thought. Then I found out about the Moab Mountain Unicycling Festival and I must say those guys have some courage. Back after a five-year hiatus, the Moab Munifest (myoo-nee-fest) returned March this year and gathered off-road unicycling enthusiasts from all over the world to descend on Moab, Utah to ride the famous trails of southern Utah.

The former director, Rolf Thompson, successfully organized the event for over 8 years and grew it from a group of less than 10 to over 200 riders. Held in and around Moab, Utah, USA in early spring, the Munifest is a non-competitive event where everyone can come to ride with friends–whether they are brand new or the best in the sport. However, the event was put on hold in 2009 and have not been held until now. In 2014, Jon Davis, a business student with a passion for the outdoors, decided to bring back his favorite event after missing it for years.

“The old Munifest was one of the most fun things I have ever done. I couldn’t be more excited to bring such a great thing back,” says Jon Davis, the director of this year’s festival.

Mountain unicycling, once a rare and unheard-of hobby, has been growing steadily in popularity in the past years.

Inspired by the original events, Jon decided to bring the Moab Munifest back so that the people could have as much fun as he did riding the amazing trails. Following that tradition, riders and friends came at the end of March to party it up in southern Utah’s playground.

“Unicycling is surprisingly accessible,” adds Jon. “The only hard part of the learning curve is starting out. If you can balance well enough to walk, you can learn to balance on a unicycle. And once you can ride a few feet on a paved surface, then riding off road is a fun, doable transition.”

If you'd like to join this event next year, get in touch with Jon or check their pages and FB for updates.
