The Snow Epic - Europe’s Fatbike Festival

The Snow Epic is Europe’s first winter festival of biking, a fatbike event that was held in the idyllic town of Engelberg, in the heart of the Swiss Alps towards the end of January. Competitors from more than 20 countries competed in 5 races over 3 days, each with its own distinct character, taking in the groomed trails and slopes normally reserved for skiers. Although new in Europe, the organizers are the same people behind the world’s foremost mountain bike stage race held in the Western Cape province, South Africa, each year. In its 11 years of existence, the Absa Cape Epic has become an international benchmark for organizational efficiency and attracts the world’s top mountain bikers every year.

Action-packed events such as the Rocky Dual night race or the Dual Slalom Night Race were the top highlights of this year's first European fatbike event. You don't know what fatbike is? Fatbikes are essentially bicycles with over-sized tires and are designed for riding on unstable terrain such as snow or desert sand. Although the handling of the bikes is different to bikes on narrower tires, they require no previous experience to ride adequately on snow. And that what makes it all fun. The stage 3, compromising of a downhill section looked like the most fun of all. Check out the video.

If you’ve missed the chance to ride the inaugural Snow Epic in 2015, be sure to join the event in 2016 at the second Snow Epic Engelberg taking place from 13 – 17 January 2016. Registrations for the 2016 Snow Epic Engelberg will open at 12h00 CET on 8 September 2015. Stay tuned!
